Over recent months I’ve become aware of the lack of disconnection many people have from their bodies. I often meet people in yoga classes or Reiki sessions who try to push their body with the strength of their mind. They ignore the signs of pain and discomfort in their body and believe that they can do anything if they just keep their minds strong.
Our body is a vehicle for our minds. To mind our mind, we need to mind our body. That means listening to messages from our body. It does not mean beating our bodies into submission by our minds. It is our task to allow our mind to get to know our bodies.
By getting to know our bodies, we would understand the messages our body is sending us. We would understand the difference between hunger and comfort eating. We would understand the difference between aches and pains caused by overwork or caused by emotional stress. We would understand when we need to go slower or rest instead forcing our body into illness.
Minding our mind means minding the body in which it is held to prevent aches, pains and illness, or at least preventing our health getting worse. What would happen if we respected our body as much as we do our homes or our cars?
