Insomnia is usually considered to be sleep deprivation, or a marked change in perceived sleep pattern. Insomnia can be divided into two categories:
- Sleep-onset insomnia: difficulty in falling asleep
- Maintenance insomnia: frequent or early awakening.
Some causes of insomnia can be self-managed through regular bedtime routines, learning to relax, listening to soft music, investing in a good, comfortable bed, taking a hot bath and reducing caffeine and alcohol intake.
Aromatherapy can help manage and relieve other causes of insomnia, such as anxiety, tension and depression. Aromatherapy. assists in calming, soothing, balancing the body, mind and emotions to prepare for sleep. After a consultation, a blend is created using 3-4 essential oils and a gentle lotion base. Usually, a relaxing hand and arm massage with the lotion will be given using the blend. This helps the body unwind and starts the essential oils working on the body’s systems to relax and unwind. A home treatment blend is also given. This blend is usually used twice a day.
