In Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), the normally rhythmic muscular contractions of the digestive tract become irregular and uncoordinated. Irritable bowel syndrome is characterised by a combination of abdominal pain, altered bowel function – constipation or diarrhoea, hypersecretion of colonic mucus, dyspeptic symptoms (flatulence, nausea, anorexia), varying degrees of anxiety or depression. Irritable bowel syndrome has symptoms similar to other disorders and it’s important to visit your doctor for an accurate diagnosis.
Three factors seem to affect irritable bowel syndrome. First colonic motor activity is abnormally high in patients with colonic pain, for example, after meals or emotional stress. Second, many patients with irritable bowel disease exhibit colonic symptoms at times of stress. It is very associated with a nervous disorder and anxiety. Third, irritable bowel syndrome has been linked to certain foods. A food sensitivity test is advised.
