Minding our mind means learning to be kind to ourselves. This includes giving ourselves permission to take a day off for mental health. This day off gives us a chance to recoup and revive our mental health so when we get back to work, we have top mental fitness.
A online post went viral from a woman in America who took a mental health day. Madalyn Parker, a web developer and engineer at Olark Live Chat, left an out of office email explaining that “I’m taking today and tomorrow to focus on my mental health. Hopefully I’ll be back next week [feeling] refreshed and back to 100%”.
Her CEO Ben Congleton responded to Madalyn with a heartwarming email. “I just wanted to personally thank you for sending emails like this. Every time you do, I use it as a reminder of the importance of using sick days for mental health – I can’t believe this is not standard practice at all organisations. You are an example to us all, and help cut through the stigma so we can bring our whole selves to work.”
