Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love, often speaks on social media about a Happiness Jar. Every year she takes a giant apothecary jar and nearly every day, at the end of the day, she writes down the best moment or moments on a scrap of paper and put it in there. These are the small little moments, easily forgotten unless they’re written down. The Happiness Jar is an exercise to practice daily gratitude.
I kept a Happiness Jar a few years ago and it was a wonderful thing to go back through all the little notes at the end of the year and smile as I remembered the evidence of all those happy moments. It could have been a kind word, or a bit of good luck, even a delicious cuppa tea at the right time. They were the quiet moments that filled me with an unexpected sense of pleasure.
Why not spend 2018 taking a few moments every day or two to record something that brought you happiness or joy during the day? Spend time at the end of the year marvelling at the little things that made you happy!
