“I feel so empowered”. Saying that out loud to someone can draw a few raised eyebrows. It’s a concept that’s common to hear in self-help and personal development books and courses. But what does it mean?
Personal empowerment means developing the confidence and strength to set realistic goals and fulfil our potential. This means we power ourselves up to learn a new skill, lose weight, start exercising or manage our health or finances. We all have strengths and weaknesses and a range of skills that are used in everyday situations, but all too often we undervalue our true abilities. Becoming empowered means learning and appreciating our true abilities and using them to help ourselves and to help others.
Becoming empowered is a daily process that of taking control of our lives by making positive choices and setting goals. Personal empowerment involves self-awareness and an understanding of what are values and what values we would like to develop. It involves developing our skills through experience, practice, education and training to achieve our goals.
Personal empowerment also means been gentle and compassionate with ourselves as we learn and understand our strengths and weaknesses. As we learn to be kinder to ourselves, we begin to see and appreciate everything that goes on in our lives daily. We find that our mental, emotional and physical health improves.
