Denial is something we all do. We deny our health when we ignore tight jeans by refusing to lose weight. We deny our health when we keep pushing ourselves when our body is screaming with pain or tiredness. We deny our health when we stay in situations that we know deep down are unhealthy.
Denial is a common defence mechanism. Defense mechanisms are often unconscious. Sometimes we don’t realize we’re using denial in the moment. Denial is the refusal to accept reality or fact, acting as if a painful event, thought or feeling did not exist. Many people use denial in their everyday lives to avoid dealing with painful feelings or areas of their life they don’t wish to admit.
Something often happens that means we can’t ignore denial anymore. Whether it’s losing weight, leaving a job or relationship or facing up to health issues, you can support yourself in overcoming denial, and make the necessary changes. Making changes is a stressor, no matter how big or small the issue seems. There are techniques you can use to manage this stress.
Find a support network of family, friends or professionals to help you. Develop a self-care programme consisting of healthy and enjoyable stress management techniques. These can include exercise, healthy eating, nature walks, yoga, meditation, massage, reiki, self-help books, journaling, courses or workshops.

Holistic therapies do not replace the need for medical attention. Holistic therapists do not diagnose medical problems or manipulate bones. Always tell me if you have a medical problem, even a minor one. There are certain situations in which caution should be taken when receiving massage and bodywork.
