How A Tired Mother Recharged From Feeling Depleted

A woman in her late 30’s came for a treatment.  She was a tired and overworked single mother.  She needed a time-out to relax and unwind and move her body from depleted to sustained.

She received a 60-minute session, half Foot Reflex Massage and half Indian Head Massage.  With her job, this woman was standing for 12 hours per day.   There are 7,200 nerve endings in each foot and by working on the feet, the body is relaxed through the nervous system.  The Indian Head Massage works by relaxing the muscles and nervous system in the upper back, upper arms, neck and head.  Often people hold a lot of tension in the shoulders and neck and this massage helps release that.

After the treatment, she was feeling very relaxed and felt like a weight was lifted from her shoulders.   She was looking forward to going home and having a good nights sleep.

Indian Head Massage Helped Relieve Tension Headaches

A 13-year old girl presented with tension headaches.  She came for Indian Head Massage.  Indian Head Massage is massage of the upper back, upper arms, neck and head.

In the first Indian Head Massage, I noticed a lot of tension in her back, shoulders and neck.  Her right shoulder was worse than the left and I asked her if this was the shoulder that she carried her school bag on the most during the day and it was.   After one 20-minute Indian Head Massage, she didn’t have any tension headaches during the following week.  She came for a second Indian Head Massage the following week as a top-up session.  She’ll come for regular sessions every 4-6 weeks to maintain back health from carrying the school bag.

Energy Boost For A Busy Mother

A very busy mother in her 40’s working inside and outside the home booked an appointment because she was feeling exhausted and very low on energy.  She was going to bed early and when she got up, she wasn’t feeling very rested.

She received a 60-minute session, half Reiki and half Indian Head Massage.  The Indian Head Massage relaxed the upper back, upper arms, neck and head.  Reiki brought her body into balance.

She looked and felt a lot better after the hour session.  The next day, I received a message saying: “Can’t tell you how good I feel and how grateful I am!!!”   She booked another session the following week as a top-up to make sure her body stays feeling good.

Stress Management For The Elderly With Indian Head Massage

A woman in her late 70’s presented with a tight back, neck and tightness across her face.

She gets 30-minute Indian Head Massages every two weeks.  She sits on a chair for this Indian Head Massage.  This is more comfortable for her.  The Indian Head Massage I give her includes the upper back, upper arms, neck, head and face.

Over the few months that she has been coming for treatments, the tension in her back, neck and face is releasing.  With regular treatments comes increased awareness.  She is seeing how a stressful conversation with someone can trigger muscle tension.

I’ve used the analogy of our minds being like washing machines.  When we’re stressed about something, our mind can get stuck on a spin cycle.  It’s this spin cycle that causes tension, when we overthink situations.  Over the course of the few months, she has been learning to manage her thoughts so that they don’t get stuck on a spin cycle.

Pain Relief With Indian Head Massage

A woman in her early 60’s presented with pain in her shoulders and right arm.  She wasn’t able to sleep because of the pain and couldn’t lie on her right side at night.

The only treatment she wanted to try was a 30-minute Indian Head Massage.   She came once a week for three weeks, and now comes once a month.

The way I work with Indian Head Massage is that it’s a very gentle treatment.  Just like you wouldn’t try to get a knot out of a length of rope or a necklace with force, I use the same approach with muscles.  Often, pain happens because of overuse of a muscle, or set of muscles.  A muscle doesn’t work in isolation.  It works with other muscles.

After one session, the pain went, and she was able to get a good nights sleep.  This has continued going forward.  She was someone who needed to be on the go all the time.  After six months of treatments, she is now beginning to take time in the evening to wind down instead of pushing herself to work until bedtime.  Not only has her physical body relaxed, her mind is beginning to relax and release the need to overwork.

Revitalised with Indian Head Massage & Foot Massage

A 46-year old woman was feeling disconnected, despairing and needed to be patient while a situation her family was going through resolved itself.

Through the consultation, she said that she wanted to try Indian Head Massage and Foot Reflex Massage.  This would balance her nervous system so she would feel more attuned to her centre of power and well-being.  From here, she would then be able to focus on the steps needed for a successful resolution of her family’s situation.

She came three times over the course of a year.  Each session helped her feel more balanced and resilient in the face of stressors.   The sessions revitalised her so she could keep going.

How A Treatment Mix Helped An Exhausted Mother

A 37-year old mother of two was feeling physically, mentally and emotionally exhausted while going through a big life change.  She wanted to feel balanced and restored to a normal level of energy again.

She wasn’t sure which treatment she wanted, so I gave her 60-minute session of Indian Head Massage, Foot Reflex Massage and Reiki.  This worked out at about 20 minutes of each one.  The main aim of the session was to relax the nervous system.  When someone feels depleted, the first thing to do is relax the nervous system.  When the nervous system is overworked from dealing with too much stimulation from too many places, it’s important to get it back to balance.

After the session, she felt brilliant.  Her face was completely relaxed.  Her body and mind had been unwound from the tight ball of tension to a place of balance.

How To Sleep Better and Feel Calmer

A woman in her 30’s came for help.   She was a mother of two children and also worked full-time in a very busy job.  She was struggling with sleep and needed to find a way to calm down, so she could handle the busyness of life.

She initially came for 60-minute Reiki sessions monthly and then tried the 60-minute Indian Head Massage and Reiki session.  With each session she got, her body’s stress response (sympathetic nervous system) was lowered to a manageable level, so that the parasympathetic nervous system could heal and repair the body.  With the nervous system calmed, the tension in the body was released.

She was able to sleep better after the treatments and was able to function much more effectively at home and at work.

Balance Your Energy Flow With Indian Head Massage

“When energy feels rebalanced, one invariably feels more alive, energised, relaxed and better able to cope with life’s pressures.” – Harper & Queen

Indian Head Massage balances the body’s energy system.  The massage of the back, arms, neck and head balances the heart, throat, third eye and crown chakras.  The gentle massage also balances acupressure points in the upper body. This encourages the release of stagnant energy and restores the energy flow to the body. This creates a feeling of balance and calm.

Improve Your Breathing with Indian Head Massage

Anxiety and stress can cause the muscles of the body to become tense. Tight muscles in the back and shoulders can affect the ability to take deep, full breaths.  Slow deep breaths help the body to relax and bring in vital oxygen.

Indian Head Massage is massage of the back, arms, neck and head.  It works on the areas prone to muscle tension caused by stress.  By relaxing the tightness in the respiratory muscles of the back, the rate on internal respiration increases and external respiration is deepened. With the respiratory muscles relaxed, lung capacity is improved.

Introduction to Indian Head Massage Videos

Indian Head Massage

In the 10 years that I’ve been an Indian Head Massage therapist, I developed a a theory that a gentle massage is vitally important as it activates the body’s parasympathetic nervous system. This aspect of our nervous system deals with regeneration, recharging, healing and growth. It’s the aspect that improves digestion and helps release tension from the body. If there was a knot in a piece of rope, we wouldn’t try and take it out deeply or roughly. A knot is gently teased out of a piece of rope. I believe that we need to treat our bodies just as gently and tease out the knots and tension so the parasympathetic nervous system can be activated. When we’re busy and going about our day and dealing with trauma, it’s the sympathetic nervous system that’s activated. It is so important to take breaks from this by effectively activating the parasympathetic nervous system.
Indian Head Massage includes massage of the upper back, upper arms, neck and head and so the name Indian Head Massage isn’t very apt. It’s a massage that focuses on areas that really gather stress. People are often surprised how relaxing the upper arm massage can be. Clients are always surprised at how gentle the massage is. This is because I am focused on relaxing the nervous system so the body is in a relaxed state to renew itself.

How often should I get a treatment?

Clients often ask me how often they should come for a treatment. It's a difficult question to answer because it is unique to each client. They are the only ones who can decide that. These three questions can help them decide.
What are you coming in for?
What is your budget?
How open is your schedule?
If you are coming for pain management, sleep problems, or coping with on-going stress then weekly is a good routine to get into. Many people are looking to maintain good health and so come weekly or fortnightly, but usually come less often.
Each of my clients have a different budget. Some can afford to come weekly while others can afford monthly treatments or less often. Most of my clients are looking to come back into balance, and worrying about paying for regular treatments may undo the benefits of the treatment! I do offer treatment bundles that can help clients save by paying for three treatments upfront.
What is your schedule like? Can you manage weekly sessions, or would monthly sessions be easier? Work and family commitments mean that th3 time available to come for treatments can be limited. So it's important to see what time you have available and make a decision about how frequently you can get a treatment
So as you can see, there are a lot of unique considerations to be taken into account for each person when they're booking treatments. It's a decision to be made by clients rather than me the therapist!
Best wishes

Understanding Indian Head Massage

The name Indian Head Massage is misleading, as in Western training and practice it includes massage of the upper back, upper arms, neck and head. These are the areas where tension caused by stress is often felt. Indian Head Massage as practiced in the West was developed by Narendra Metha and first made it's appearance in the UK in 1981. The recipient remains clothed throughout. I don't use any oils. During an Indian Head Massage, clients sit on a chair or lie face down on a massage couch.
Different therapists have different ways of giving Indian Head Massage. Some are able to go deeper than others. My Indian Head Massage is a gentle massage that helps bring the body back into balance. The body has been through a lot to show the effects of stress. I believe that a gentle massage activates the body's relaxation response and parasympathetic nervous system, bringing peace into the body and mind.

Traditional Indian Head Massage
Indian Head Massage is a treatment that developed from head massage practiced in India in the home and in barber shops.
Massage has always played an important part in Indian life, featuring in the earliest Ayurvedic texts, which date back nearly 4000 years. When used in conjunction with herbs, spices and aromatic oils, massage had an important medical function and could not only "strengthen muscles and firm the skin", but also encourage the body's natural healing abilities.

Indian infants often receive a daily massage from birth until they are 3 years old to keep them in good health and then from 3‑6 they are massaged once or twice a week. After 6, they are then taught to share a massage with family members and massage then occurs across the generations as an integral part of family life.

Indian Head Massage comes from this rich massage tradition of family grooming. Originally developed by women who used different oils according to the season (coconut, sesame, almond, olive oil, herbal oils, buttermilk, mustard oil and henna) to keep their hair strong, lustrous and in beautiful condition.

Barbers practiced many of these same skills. They would mostly practice their trade by going to individual's houses, cutting hair and often offering Champi (head massage) as part of the treatment. This became quite a normal custom so that most people from the king down would have someone come to tend to them. Treatments would differ from the massages performed by women in that they were mainly invigorating scalp massages designed to stimulate and refresh the individual, not as part of a beauty treatment.

These skills have evolved through the ages and have been handed down from barber father to barber son in much the same way that the females in the family have kept the tradition of hair massage and grooming by passing it down from mother to daughter.

Narendra Mehta
Narendra Mehta, a blind massage therapist, had grown up with head massage as an integral part of his daily life, something to be automatically experienced every time he visited a barber.

When he came to England to train as a physical therapist in the 1970's, he was dismayed to find that head massage was not generally available but that the head seemed to be a completely neglected area even in a full body massage.
He missed the therapeutic value of regular head massage and decided to develop a massage system that would focus on the head. He knew by experience that working on the head could bring relaxation and relief from aches and pains in the head. By helping to dispel tension, head massage can become an excellent hair conditioner as well as a means of removing stress‑linked troubles.

In 1978, he returned to India to study with leading practitioners of this ancient art, studying it wherever it was practised: barber shops, street corners, beaches, and in family homes. Although he enjoyed being worked on, he felt that there was something missing in the massage. There was a slight improvement in well being, the effects were too short‑lived to be of any therapeutic benefit. The barbers would focus on the scalp and the women on treating the hair.

Also, everyone who worked with him had his or her own individual technique which had been handed down through the generations. Narendra decided that he would formalise what he experienced and use his heightened sensitivity as a blind person to discover which part of his body reacted most positively to various moves.
His research led him to two conclusions:

1. The treatment could benefit by being extended from just the hair and scalp to the face, neck and shoulders which are vulnerable areas for the accumulation of stress and tension.
2. By introducing an Ayurvedic element into the massage by working on the highest three Chakras, the whole energy system in the body and consequently the whole person could be brought back into balance.

When these two elements were added to traditional Head Massage, Narendra found he had a new holistic therapy which could be used effectively to treat the whole person.

This new therapy was introduced at the 1981 Mind, Body and Spirit exhibition in England where 179 clients came to the stand suffering from headaches and exhibition exhaustion and left recharged and relaxed. Treating clients at his clinic and at exhibitions allowed Narendra to study the effects of his techniques in depth and to revise and expand them.

Indian Head Massage (Indian Champissage) has received a lot of positive exposure since its introduction in the UK and has led to its current popularity amongst health practitioners and the general public.

Anxiety Help With Indian Head Massage

Anxiety is one of the most common reasons people come to see me. Amongst other things, anxiety causes muscle tension, headaches, sleep problems and irritability.

Here are some ways Indian Head Massage helps manage and relieve anxiety:
1. Indian Head Massage includes massage of the upper back, upper arms, neck and head, so keys areas that hold muscle tension are relieved.
2. The body and mind needs to learn alternative ways of coping with life and it takes time and patience to do so. Through getting regular 30 minute Indian Head Massages, the body and mind learns how to relax, creating opportunites for moments of calm.
3. People who get regular 30 minute Indian Head Massages often feel anxious and guilty about taking that time for themselves. After 1-2 sessions, they see that their lives have improved and it makes taking 30 minutes for themselves not a luxury, but a neccessity.
